Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. e emphasise the character of an individual trip: P norama views, a particularly lovely interior, a location in historic centres or in the countryside, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We categorise our hotels in Iceland into three separate categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories within one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Three categories
Encantador (‘Charming’): You can expect simple, Nordic cosiness in these accommodations, where you will immediately feel at home. With good services and a good location, the houses offer the perfect accommodation for your short stay.
Especial (‘special’): Hotels in this category are particularly impressive due to their especially stylish furnishings in the popular Scandi design. Mostly These are family-run accommodations located in beautiful surroundings – some even on real farms. fr You can also look forward to many great extras.
Extraordinario (‘extraordinary’): Luxus and pure aesthetics, discreetly embedded in the surrounding landscape: accommodation in the Extraordinario category will inspire you with its special architecture and design. ab They also offer particularly spacious rooms and suites and fantastic local cuisine.
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Start your cultural trip in the capital Reykjavík. It not only shines with character buildings such as the Hallgrímskirkja, which is modelled on the pillars of Svartifoss. In numerous museums, you will find yourself immersed in the history of this fascinating island. Learn more about the settlement of Iceland, its glaciers and volcanoes or treat yourself to a trip to the moon in Húsavík at Könnunarsögusafnið, which tells you all about the training for the first moon landing that took place in Iceland. Experience a piece of architectural and everyday history at the Árbær Open-Air Museum just outside Reykjavík.
But you don’t necessarily have to go to a museum to experience great history. You can encounter it in the streets of Reykjavík, among other places, but also in the middle of the wild, lonely landscape. Visit the Lögberg, the earlier site of Icelandic legislation. Visit the oldest parliament in the world or stand at the place where the end of the Cold War was sealed. Around many a corner in the capital, you will also discover charismatic murals and artistic sculptures in the centre of the city. This turns your stroll through the city into a walk through an open-air museum.
Experience nature
Iceland’s landscapes are legendary. For the holy mountain of the Icelanders, Helgafell, this even applies in the literal sense. However, many of Iceland’s mountains, rocks, caves and lakes are shrouded in legend. On your 15-day round trip through Iceland, you will discover a piece of the folk soul of its inhabitants along with the fascinating landscapes. You can experience just how impressive the volcanic landscape can be at Svartifoss in Skaftafell National Park. Here, the water of Stórilækur shoots over imposing basalt columns into the depths. Experience a truly emotional moment at one of Iceland’s Lost Places, Sólheimasandur, where the elements rage around the wreck of the Skytrain. In contrast, the Diamond Beach, whose “diamonds” are thumb- to man-sized pieces of ice from the nearby Vatnajökull, appears almost fairytale-like. No matter how often you visit this beach in your hire car, it will always show you a new face. Another phenomenon that you simply have to experience on your individual 15-day round trip through Iceland is the Strokkur, whose fountain shoots up to 40 metres into the air and is considered one of the most reliable geysers in the country.
In addition to its landscapes, Iceland has another natural wonder to offer off its coast: Whales. If you really want to meet one of these gentle giants, then take the boat and head out off Húsavík. Here in the “whale-watching capital of Iceland”, you can encounter minke, sperm and humpback whales, and sometimes even the majestic blue whales.
Iceland's culinary delights
Just like its landscapes, Iceland’s cuisine is also a little adventure. It ranges from extremely tasty to bizarre tests of courage. The latter clearly includes Hákarl, fermented shark. For some, Svið, the black scorched sheep’s head, is more of a visual challenge. In addition to such traditional specialities, modern Icelandic cuisine offers a delicious variety. In particular, fish is on the menu here in all varieties: raw, boiled, fried, steamed, grilled or dried. In addition to everything good from the sea, reindeer and lamb, the menu also includes duck, goose, puffin and even horse. They are usually served with potatoes and various vegetables. Many restaurants have now also created vegetarian and even vegan options in the Icelandic style, with mushrooms often ending up in the pot.
What is less well known is that Icelanders love sweets more than anything else and create very refined creams, cakes, tarts and other desserts. Here, too, there are curiosities such as cocoa soup with rusks. Iceland also has incredibly delicious pancake varieties such as Lummur and Pönnukökur. Icelanders are also incredibly fond of ice cream, which is why you can try it in abundance and in many flavours.
The authentic Iceland
Where can you best combine the relaxed Icelandic way of life with the island’s magnificent nature? We think: with a wellness moment in the Blue Lagoon. Immerse yourself in the naturally mineral-rich, milky light blue water and enjoy the view of the midnight sun in the warm water or the iridescent Northern Lights in winter. You can daydream about Icelandic myths while listening to the melodic language of the Icelanders, who also like to relax here.
