Geotoura – Hotel concept

When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.

We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.

Boutique Hotels – Four categories

Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.

Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.

Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.

Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …

Character of this travel idea

Get to know Albania from its most beautiful side on this 14-day round trip and fall hopelessly in love with this still relatively unknown holiday region. On this round trip in a hire car, we will show you the special charm of the country, its fascinating history and unique natural scenery that will take your breath away. So take your time and immerse yourself in the picturesque beaches, ancient and medieval sites and lost places that only exist in Albania.

Experience culture

When you think of Albania, you probably immediately think of the not-so-charming block buildings from the communist era. In Albania, however, you will also find plenty of contrasts: for example, the historic old town of Gjirokastra, whose artfully cobbled streets earned the place the nickname “City of Stones”. Nowhere else can you experience the so-called Balkan architecture in its full bloom like here. For example, browse through the authentically furnished Zekate House, visit the birthplace of Enver Hoxha in Gjirokastra, which now houses an ethnological museum, or climb up to the majestic castle.

With Berat, you enter the “City of 1,000 Windows”, whose nickname is quickly explained when you look uphill from below at the houses, which almost look stacked with their high windows. The special thing about Berat is Kalaja – the fortress. It is not only a historical bulwark for the defence of the city, but also an entire district that is still inhabited today and where the breath of history wafts around the old stone corners of the houses.

On your 14-day round trip through Albania, you also have the opportunity to get a taste of some very exciting museums. Descend into the bunker of the “Museum of the Cold War” in Gjirokastra. Visit the spectacular works in the Gjon-Mili Museum in Korça or its Museum School from 1887. The two Bunk’Art Museums in Tirana and the Ethnographic Museum of Berat are also fascinating.

Experience nature

On this 14-day round trip, you will open the treasure chest of Albania’s nature from the majestic, ancient trees of the mountain forests in Llogara National Park down to the sea with its picturesque sandy beaches and secluded bays, of which the country has several.

In the Tomorr National Park, you will conquer a breathtaking mountain landscape on the hike up to the more than 2,000 high peaks, which is not known to the Albanians as the “Mountain of the Gods” for nothing. Start at the foot in lush green forests and climb uphill over grey-green slopes to the snow-covered, white peaks and look from above over a landscape that will quickly make you forget the here and now and simply marvel.

You will also get goosebumps when you stop off at Lake Ohrid in your hire car. No one can escape the magic of this almost 1.4 million-year-old freshwater lake, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. It is both a bathing paradise and a refuge for rare species, some of which can only be found here.

Albania: A culinary journey through time

The cuisine of Albania reflects its chequered history. Oriental, Mediterranean, Greek and Italian influences come together here to create flavours that are sometimes light and sometimes hearty. Classics such as byrek, qofte, moussaka and pilaf are available throughout the country, but in countless regional variations. Other recipes such as Oshmare Korçe and Lakror from Korça are particularly popular in certain regions. Fish and seafood are plentiful, especially in the coastal towns. However, one fish speciality also comes from the interior: Ohrid trout.

The authentic Albania

Discover one of the institutions of Albanian drinks where it originates: Birra Korça. Perhaps the country’s best-known beer brand is still brewed in Korça today and, with a bit of luck, you can look over the brewer’s shoulder. Once you’ve learned the secret of this beer in theory, you can of course taste it – in the brewery’s cosy beer garden.

Or perhaps you prefer to immerse yourself in the colourful life of old markets. Then you should head to the old bazaar in Tirana. Here you will not only find fantastic, typical street food. The story behind the recipe or the ingredients and their origin is all too often included free of charge.
