Exploring Sicily: A good idea at any time of year
Of course, Bella Italia should not be missing from our travel bucket list in 2024. One of our absolute favourite destinations: Sicily! But which time of year is best for a trip to the largest island in the Mediterranean? We think: all of them! We have summarised the highlights from spring to winter for you.
Spring in Sicily Splendour of flowers and culture
From March to May, you can experience one of the most beautiful times in Sicily. Everywhere on the island is in bloom and it smells of almond and lemon trees. Temperatures climb to 20 to 25 degrees from April onwards, while the sea is still a little fresh with a water temperature of 16 degrees. If you dare, you can still take a dip, otherwise spring is perfect for excursions to the island’s many cultural highlights. If you want to explore Mount Etna: better pack your boots, as there can still be snow here in spring.
The summer months The best time for sun-seekers
Summer in Sicily starts at the end of May and lasts until October, with July and August often being the hottest months with temperatures of over 35 degrees. If you come to the island primarily to swim in the turquoise-coloured water, summer is the perfect time. The towns along the coast can get very crowded in summer. Our tip: The more mountainous interior of the island is quieter and the temperatures are more refreshing. If you stay here in summer, you can combine a peaceful nature holiday with trips to the beach.
The glowing autumn It's time to relax
Autumn brings more tranquillity and a wonderful light to the island. This is also the start of the culinary season in Sicily. At markets and traditional festivals, everything revolves around chestnuts, mushrooms and cheese. September marks the start of the olive harvest, which is also a special experience. The sun still shines for up to seven hours a day until November and temperatures are just over 20 degrees. In October, it is also still possible to take a dip in the sea, which has heated up over the summer. Autumn is therefore the perfect time to combine swimming, culture and culinary delights.
Winter on the island Perfect time for taking a deep breath
Enjoying deserted beaches and the sights of the island in peace and quiet: That’s possible in winter on Sicily. With temperatures of around 10 degrees in the centre of the island and around 15 degrees on the coast, it’s a wonderful way to escape the cold winter in Germany, even without bathing weather. Good to know: Catania is the city with the lowest rainfall in Sicily, which makes it a good winter destination. In general, you are more likely to find hotels and restaurants open in the cities during the quiet winter months than in the rural regions of Sicily.
