Laura Schieferdecker
Very British with great traditions Between royals, nature and history

For me, Great Britain is a bit elegant, a bit original and also a bit quirky. I just love it, from the Royal Family to myths like Loch Ness and five o’clock tea. I particularly enjoy drifting through the streets of London and letting the buzz of life wash over me. In Canterbury, I dream of times gone by and sometimes feel for a moment as if I’m on my way to Hogwarts among its old buildings.

And then there’s the other Great Britain. The enchanted landscapes of Scotland with deep lochs, vast moors and stories of kelpies, water horses and ghosts in old goose barns. Just meadows, horses and a gentle breeze – for me, these are the moments of tranquillity on Dartmoor and Exmoor. Just pause for a moment, take a deep breath and be with myself – these places are simply fantastic for that.

The South of England has significantly shaped our image of the once great seafaring nation. On your round trip here, you will follow Charles Dickens through the fantastically beautiful Canterbury with its weavers’ houses and imposing cathedral. In Oxford, let the majesty of one of the world’s most famous and renowned universities waft around your nose. In the middle of the green island landscape, you will discover the famous English garden art in gardens such as the Mansions of Great Dixter. A strong contrast to this is London, which never sleeps. Countless museums, the Tower, street art, galleries, events, … – there’s always something to do here in the capital. Edinburgh also has a rich cultural scene in the north, with the Royal Mile at its heart. Here, it is only a stone’s throw from great architecture to countless stories that have shaped the city and sometimes the whole of Scotland.

Beyond the borders of the historic cities, another world begins. Head to the Jurassic Coast on your round trip through Great Britain, for example, and discover a piece of the world from the time of the dinosaurs on the rugged, impressive coastline. Drive north in a hire car, marvel at the bizarre rock needles of Duncansby Head on the coast of Scotland or look out for perhaps Europe’s most famous monster at Loch Ness.

You can fortify yourself on your journey with traditional cuisine that often lives up to its somewhat special reputation in a different way than you might expect. So it doesn’t have to be haggis or meat in mint sauce. The British are just as good at hefty English breakfasts, shepherd’s pie or rumpled potatoes as they are at fine, modern and rather light cuisine and incredibly delicious desserts. Many a café still has its own recipes for juicy cakes and delicious tarts and they don’t just taste good at five o’clock with tea.

Regions in Great Britain for your tour

Tips for your trip through Great Britain.

Driving in Great Britain

There are two major differences between driving in the UK and driving in Germany. Firstly, there is left-hand traffic! The second difference is the distances measured in miles. The minimum age for hiring a car is usually 21. For higher vehicle classes, a minimum age of 23 or even 25 years may be required. It is also possible that a minimum driving experience is required. Please note: Without a credit card and the corresponding PIN code, you will not be able to hire a car.

What driving licence do I need?

At present, national driving licences from EU member states and Switzerland are still recognised in the UK. It goes without saying that your driving licence must be valid. Therefore, please check the expiry date in good time before travelling.

Traffic rules

Left-hand traffic applies in Great Britain. There is no 'right before left' rule. The right of way is usually regulated by the traffic signs 'STOP' or 'GIVE WAY'. A solid white line means STOP, a broken double line means slow down and give way. At a few junctions where there are no traffic signs, the main roads have priority, and communication between road users may apply. Roundabouts run in a clockwise direction, so whoever is on the roundabout has right of way. Move into the correct lane in good time and turn left before exiting. If you only want to take the third exit, please move into the right-hand lane, indicate to the right when entering the roundabout and to the left when exiting.

Tolls on motorways

There are a few roads, bridges and city centres in the UK for which tolls must be paid. Dartford Crossing and the city toll in London can only be paid online, by telephone, by post or at Payzone points of sale (petrol stations, post offices) in advance or by midnight the following day. Further information on the toll can be found on the ADAC website at https://www.adac.de/reise-freizeit/maut-vignette/grossbritannien

Parking rules

A yellow or red line at the edge of the carriageway means no parking, a solid yellow or red double line indicates an absolute ban on stopping and parking. Where there are dashed yellow lines, parking is prohibited at certain times. Official car parks are marked with a blue 'P' sign.

Speed limits

Within built-up areas, the speed limit is 30 mph (48 km/h), outside built-up areas the maximum speed is 60 mph (97 km/h), and on motorways and dual carriageways the speed limit is 70 mph (113 km/h).
