But the university city of Exeter doesn’t have to hide behind this cornucopia of exciting moments. When you arrive there, you’ll find yourself wandering through an encyclopaedia of British architectural styles: intricate Gothic, Urglian Tudor, noble Gregorian, … Exeter is almost an open-air museum for architecture lovers. However, there is one attraction in the city that you won’t see at first glance: the Underground Passages. The underground labyrinth you walk through was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and was used to supply drinking water to the bustling medieval city. You shouldn’t be claustrophobic, as some of the passages are quite narrow. If that’s not a problem, then be sure to put on your helmet in Exeter, tuck the map of the passages under your arm and descend into the labyrinth of bygone times.

The first thing you see of England is, of course, the imposing, gleaming white chalk cliffs of Dover – a greeting from the time of the dinosaurs that characterised the entire Jurassic Coast. If you continue along the coastline, you will discover secluded bays and in some places even palm trees that don’t seem at all English. Behind the coast, the lush green hills begin with sheep, old manor houses and the famous English gardens. Here in the proverbial, very wet weather, there are also some moorland landscapes that not only exude a charm all of their own, but also harbour many a little rarity. You will discover these if you look to the right and left of the path from time to time. Dartmoor National Park is reminiscent of a moor in name only. Drive out here quietly on your individual round trip from Exeter. Visit the tough little ponies in their barren, almost fairy-like home.

The individual counties in the south of England have specialities that have established the reputation of English cuisine as something special, but which also reflect the history of the respective region. Wiltshire, for example, was once known as the ‘Kingdom of the Pig’. No wonder that, in addition to many pork dishes, the region is also home to black pudding and faggots, which are made from the blood and offal of pigs. Somerset, on the other hand, is home to one of the most famous cheeses in the world, cheddar. The original cheese is still matured here as a cave cheese. Less famous but no less delicious are the cheese specialities from Devon, including the blue cheese Devon Blue, the creamy Belstone and the somewhat younger version of Belstone, Curworthy.

The orchards of Somerset are also home to cider, which is not only a favourite of the British in this region. Cornwall boasts a wide variety of fish and seafood, which the locals use to prepare dishes such as Baked Mackerel with Gooseberry Sauce, Crab Salad and Stargazy Pie with Sardines. Clotted cream, which is eaten with scones and jam all over the country, also comes from here. Sussex has certainly helped to establish the reputation of British cuisine as slightly quirky. Among the dishes prepared here are Lamb’s Ears, for which lamb’s ears are cooked with sorrel, and Pulborough Eels, a pie made from eel and cured pork. If that sounds too weird to taste, we recommend the delicious, sweet Ripe Tart or Sussex Plum Duffs, two desserts that are definitely worth savouring.
