Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Once you leave the hustle and bustle of Athens, you will soon find yourself at one of the most important sites in Greece: Mycenae. Here you stand in awe before the huge stones of the Cyclopean walls and wander through the cradle of antiquity. More than 3,200 years old, it takes you back to the roots of later greatness and into the everyday lives of the people.
In Nafplio, you will meet someone you would hardly expect to see here: a Bavarian. More precisely: Otto I, who began and ended his reign over Greece here. Many of the houses along the winding streets and alleyways are still reminiscent of him today. More than 2,000 years separate Otto I from one of the most famous highlights on this 12-day tour of Greece.
She once sat here in the vapours from the underworld and prophesied to the great and powerful: the Pythia, probably one of the most famous oracles in the world. Even today, her words seem to hang like a distant whisper over the ruins of Delphi.
Experience nature
Kalamata and Koroni are famous for their fine olives. Stroll through the endless groves that have characterised the gently rolling hills for centuries, which begin behind the fine sandy beaches of Koroni. Don’t be surprised if you find an almost tropical flair here with palm trees that thrive around Kalamata.
On your journey in a hire car, you will also be enchanted by the sharp contrast between the rugged cliffs of the mountains and the lush green of the fertile valleys that are so typical of the Peloponnese. So don’t hesitate to pull over on the way and immerse yourself in this wonderful Mediterranean landscape.
Peloponnese culinary treasures
As in all regions of Greece, there are traditional and local delicacies that you should not miss out on when travelling through the Peloponnese. While fish and seafood dominate the menus in the coastal regions, traditional specialities such as kakavia, a kind of bouillabaisse in which the fish is served separately, or stifado, a stew usually made from beef or rabbit meat with an extremely tasty sauce to which cinnamon and cloves add the finishing touches, can be found particularly in the small tavernas inland.
Savour the Mani Syglino, pork smoked in sage, or the Mani salad, a delicious potato salad with oranges, capers and fresh herbs. Vegetables are not neglected in the ‘Garden of the Gods’ either, as fruit and vegetables are grown here in large quantities. Anthús, courgette flowers stuffed with rice and herbs, okra pods or beans in tomato sauce, artichokes and aubergines prepared in a variety of ways, fresh fruit not only delight the palates of vegetarians. Of course, the tasty olive oil from Kalamata should not be missed – it also tastes delicious on its own with white bread. Around a quarter of the wines from Greece come from the Peloponnese, so you can also indulge yourself in this respect.
The authentic Greece
The theatres of antiquity were a milestone in science and architecture. One of the finest examples of this is the theatre at Epidauros. When you stand on these steps, the dramas and tragedies that these ancient stones once witnessed come to life.
So feel free to listen in while the locals tell you more about the ancient theatre and its hidden secrets. You will discover a culinary secret in Nafplio. Here you can follow in the footsteps of ouzo and tsipouros and taste delicious honey in the picturesque orange and olive groves while the beekeeper tells you all about his bees, the trees and the uniquely beautiful landscape.
