Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
In Iceland you immerse yourself in another world. Ancient buildings are rare here. And yet many of the buildings on your 10-day tour of Iceland will amaze you. First and foremost, of course, the Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík. You can get a taste of the history of Icelandic architecture not far from the capital at the Arbær Open-Air Museum. The drive out here in a hire car is definitely worth it.
However, the buildings that seem almost inconspicuous at first glance, such as the small white and red church in Vík í Mýrdal, are also beautiful. It is above all the small villages where the traditional Nordic houses exude their typical charm. You will also find contemporary history, cultural activities and traces of the past in Akureyri, including the Menningahúsið Farm Cultural Centre, the Nonnahus and the Græni Hatturinn, where you can enjoy wonderful concerts.
Experience nature
Iceland is one big natural wonder. No matter where you get out of your hire car, you will always end up in the middle of beautiful and touching, often spectacular landscapes. One such natural landscape can be found around Mývatn, for example. Even if the translation “mosquito lake” doesn’t sound very inviting, you should definitely explore this region. Otherwise you will miss the bizarre rock formations of the Dimmuborgir lava fields, the huge crater of Hverfjall, the Hverarönd mud volcanoes and the Grjótagjá cave right on the fault zone of the continental plates.
One of the most spectacular landscapes in Iceland awaits you in Thingvellir National Park not far from Reykjavík. Here you stand on the edge of a rift valley and look down into the depths, where the North American and Eurasian plates are drifting apart and the Öxarárfoss rushes into the depths. In the midst of this wilderness, your 10-day round trip through Iceland will also bring you closer to a piece of the island’s history, the Lögberg, where the laws of the Icelanders were proclaimed in earlier times.
If you drive to the sea at Vík í Mýrdal, you will land directly on one of the black beaches for which Iceland is so famous. The Reynisfjara is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, where you can let your mind wander as you gaze at the bizarre rocks rising from the sea. It is also not far from here to the enormous cave that yawns in the nearby Reynisfjall mountain.

The authentic Iceland
While eating and drinking, you will learn more about the country, its traditions and its people. North of Akureyri, you can also combine the culinary delights with the way of life: Treat yourself to the relaxed Icelanders in combination with a beer tasting. Where can you do that? In the Bjórböðin SPA, where you can enjoy a cosy, warm beer bath and sample one of the Kaldi beers brewed here. A blessing for body and soul that wonderfully describes Iceland and its people without words.
