Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. e emphasise the character of an individual trip: P norama views, a particularly lovely interior, a location in historic centres or in the countryside, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We categorise our hotels in Iceland into three separate categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories within one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Three categories
Encantador (‘Charming’): You can expect simple, Nordic cosiness in these accommodations, where you will immediately feel at home. With good services and a good location, the houses offer the perfect accommodation for your short stay.
Especial (‘special’): Hotels in this category are particularly impressive due to their especially stylish furnishings in the popular Scandi design. Mostly These are family-run accommodations located in beautiful surroundings – some even on real farms. fr You can also look forward to many great extras.
Extraordinario (‘extraordinary’): Luxus and pure aesthetics, discreetly embedded in the surrounding landscape: accommodation in the Extraordinario category will inspire you with its special architecture and design. ab They also offer particularly spacious rooms and suites and fantastic local cuisine.
Character of this travel idea
Winter has a very special magic in Iceland. The contrasts between steaming hot springs and bubbling lava and the endless ice and snow become even more tangible and transform the island into an almost unearthly place where your dreams take flight. On this 13-day round trip through the north and south of Iceland, let yourself be captivated by scenery that you won’t find anywhere else on the planet and get to know the typical Icelandic attitude to life.
Experience culture
Start your trip to Iceland with the highlights of Reykjavík. Get to know the Hallgímskirkja, one of the most striking churches in the world, stroll through the Einar Jónsson Sculpture Garden with its snow-covered works of art and enjoy the fantastic view of the city from the dome of the Perlan before immersing yourself in Reykjavík’s exciting and curious world of museums. Icelandic sagas, skilful sailors, rebellious punks, a curious phallus collection and settlement history you can touch in the Árbær open-air museum await you on this 13-day round trip through Iceland.
Enter the Thingvellir National Park, not only a magnificent natural setting, but also the place where the world’s first parliament was founded. In the Museum Könnunarsögusafnið, you will then leave (almost) earthly spheres and follow in the footsteps of the training for the first moon landing in history. In Akureyri, on the other hand, things get almost cosy when you visit the Christmas House with its white bonnet. A time capsule also awaits you not far from the town: time seems to have stood still in the Museum Village Laufas, which takes you back to a harsh but also exciting era in Icelandic everyday life.
Experience nature
Winter leaves its unmistakable mark on the landscapes that you will get to know on this individual trip through Iceland in a hire car. There is the snow-covered Goðafoss not far from Akureyri. In contrast, every flake melts in the heat of the Hverarönd mud volcanoes at Mývatn or at the Lava Rivers near Vík í Mýrdal. Winter is also the time when the imposing Eyjafjallajökull grows again. Now the picturesque Aldeyjarfoss also gets a wonderful white frame, which makes the turquoise-coloured lake at the foot of the mighty basalt columns shine once again.
It’s not just the interior of the island that takes on a very special magic in winter. A thick, white blanket now covers the black Sólheimsandur, from which the wreck of the Skytrain still stands out. The clear, sometimes almost biting cold on the coast doesn’t bother the whales off Húsavík. You can also encounter these gentle giants in winter. So it’s worth wrapping up and taking the boat out if you’re looking for a very special encounter.
Iceland's culinary delights
Just like its landscapes, Iceland’s cuisine is also a little adventure. It ranges from extremely tasty to bizarre tests of courage. The latter clearly includes Hákarl, fermented shark. For some, Svið, the black scorched sheep’s head, is more of a visual challenge. In addition to such traditional specialities, modern Icelandic cuisine offers a delicious variety. In particular, fish is on the menu here in all varieties: raw, boiled, fried, steamed, grilled or dried. In addition to everything good from the sea, reindeer and lamb, the menu also includes duck, goose, puffin and even horse. They are usually served with potatoes and various vegetables. Many restaurants have now also created vegetarian and even vegan options in the Icelandic style, with mushrooms often ending up in the pot.
What is less well known is that Icelanders love sweets more than anything else and create very refined creams, cakes, tarts and other desserts. Here, too, there are curiosities such as cocoa soup with rusks. Iceland also has incredibly delicious pancake varieties such as Lummur and Pönnukökur. Icelanders are also incredibly fond of ice cream, which is why you can try it in abundance and in many flavours.
The authentic Iceland
In the cold of winter, the hot pools and springs of Iceland have an almost magical attraction. Give in to temptation and relax in the warm water of the Sky Lagoon in the freezing cold. Lean back and dream away with the Northern Lights above you into the legendary world of the island, which suddenly doesn’t seem so far away in this special place.
