Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. e emphasise the character of an individual trip: P norama views, a particularly lovely interior, a location in historic centres or in the countryside, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We categorise our hotels in Iceland into three separate categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories within one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Three categories
Encantador (‘Charming’): You can expect simple, Nordic cosiness in these accommodations, where you will immediately feel at home. With good services and a good location, the houses offer the perfect accommodation for your short stay.
Especial (‘special’): Hotels in this category are particularly impressive due to their especially stylish furnishings in the popular Scandi design. Mostly These are family-run accommodations located in beautiful surroundings – some even on real farms. fr You can also look forward to many great extras.
Extraordinario (‘extraordinary’): Luxus and pure aesthetics, discreetly embedded in the surrounding landscape: accommodation in the Extraordinario category will inspire you with its special architecture and design. ab They also offer particularly spacious rooms and suites and fantastic local cuisine.
Character of this travel idea
Experience Culture
Iceland is different – also culturally. Christianity and paganism live even closer together here than in other European countries. Here, the harsh climate and volcanic activity characterise people’s lives and buildings. One of the most beautiful results of these influences is the Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík. Its striking silhouette was inspired by the spectacular backdrop of Svartifoss, whose water falls over a ledge of imposing basalt columns. In the Icelandic capital, you can also trace the legends of ancient Iceland at the Saga Museum or take a hands-on journey through time at the Open-Air Museum Árbær, where you can peek inside houses from different eras. The sculptures of a great Icelandic artist, Einar Jónsson, can also be found in the open air. Some of his works can be found in the picturesque Sculpture Garden. Some are also scattered around the capital Reykjavík. The sculpture “Sun Voyager” by artist Jón Gunnar at Faxaflói Bay is also famous. Beyond the capital, you will discover traditional life in small towns and sometimes tiny villages on your 10-day round trip through south-west Iceland.
Experience nature
Iceland is home to some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. When you arrive in your hire car on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, you will land in the middle of a miniature Iceland where you can experience almost all of these fascinating phenomena up close. Feel the goosebumps when you look down into the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge or marvel at the fascinating silhouette of Kirkjufell, which you will find in the cult series “Games of Thrones”, among others. Descend into the belly of the earth in the Vatnshellir Cave and follow in the footsteps of the volcanoes underground. Iceland’s mountains of fire have also created a monument right by the sea – with the violent basalt columns of the Gerðuberg cliff. Immerse yourself in Icelandic folklore at Helgafell, the holy mountain of the Icelanders, which according to legend is said to fulfil three wishes for anyone who climbs it.
Wonders also await you off the coast of Snæfellsnes. Hop on a boat in Ólafsvík and head out to meet the gentle giants of the sea, the whales. You will encounter the largest of them, the blue whales off the coast of Selfoss. Get up close to the giants – this is one of the unforgettable nature moments on your 10-day round trip through south-west Iceland.
Iceland's culinary delights
Just like its landscapes, Iceland’s cuisine is also a little adventure. It ranges from extremely tasty to bizarre tests of courage. The latter clearly includes Hákarl, fermented shark. For some, Svið, the black scorched sheep’s head, is more of a visual challenge. In addition to such traditional specialities, modern Icelandic cuisine offers a delicious variety. In particular, fish is on the menu here in all varieties: raw, boiled, fried, steamed, grilled or dried. In addition to everything good from the sea, reindeer and lamb, the menu also includes duck, goose, puffin and even horse. They are usually served with potatoes and various vegetables. Many restaurants have now also created vegetarian and even vegan options in the Icelandic style, with mushrooms often ending up in the pot.
What is less well known is that Icelanders love sweets more than anything else and create very refined creams, cakes, tarts and other desserts. Here, too, there are curiosities such as cocoa soup with rusks. Iceland also has incredibly delicious pancake varieties such as Lummur and Pönnukökur. Icelanders are also incredibly fond of ice cream, which is why you can try it in abundance and in many flavours.
The authentic Iceland
Get a taste of the intimate details of Iceland on your 9-day round trip through Iceland’s south-west in Reykjavík. There’s no better place to do this in the capital than at the Kolaportið flea market. You can find it on Saturdays and Sundays not far from the harbour. Everything that makes Iceland special can be found here: New and old, art and junk, books, the original hand-knitted Icelandic jumpers and the smell of the food stalls and some speciality stalls hangs over everything – which you should definitely follow. Here you will meet locals, hear little everyday stories, enjoy a genuine snack culture and perhaps find your very own flea market treasure.
