Geotoura - Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We categorise our accommodation in the British Isles into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels - Four categories
Encantador (‘Charming’): Privately run bed & breakfast guesthouses with a small number of cosy rooms and a lovingly prepared breakfast.
Especial (‘Special’): Enjoy stylish interiors and comfort in the mostly family-run boutique hotels with historic charm. Stay in the city centre or in beautiful natural surroundings.
Extraordinario (‘Extraordinary’): Centuries-old buildings, such as historic manor houses or castles, sometimes also modern design hotels with special architecture. Usually equipped with a restaurant, bar or spa area.
Luna de Miel (‘honeymoon’): For your honeymoon – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
In the middle of the bizarre landscape of the Burren rises a monumental portal tomb: the Poulnabrone Dolmen. You stand almost in awe in front of the enormous stones, which are around 1.80 metres high and support a huge, massive ceiling slab. And suddenly your mind starts to wander: how were people able to erect and assemble these stones, which weigh tonnes, 6,000 years ago? Ireland’s oldest portal tomb still leaves you in awe today.
The Craggaunowen open-air museum takes you not quite so far back in time. Here, the Bronze Age comes back to life in authentically recreated houses and countless details. So if you haven’t had enough after visiting Limerick with its exciting museums, it’s well worth taking a trip to this living museum in the middle of the forest on your 9-day tour.
The Middle Ages welcome you into the mighty walls of Bunratty Castle. How did people once sleep, eat, love and live here? You can find out in the authentically furnished and richly detailed rooms. Between the four-poster bed in the stately bedroom and the straw in the dungeon, between the turtles and soup kettles in the kitchen, you will be transported back in time to castle life in no time at all.
Experience nature
The light in Connemara is special. That’s what everyone who has visited this wonderful region says. It envelops one of the most beautiful landscapes you will see on this 9-day round trip through Ireland: the Connemara National Park with its vast heathland, ancient moors, dark lakes and dramatic cliffs. It’s a wonderful place to daydream. And sometimes the small, tough Connemara ponies gallop into your dream, stealing the hearts of more than just die-hard horse lovers. Stand on Diamond Hill and look out over the countryside and you will realise why Oscar Wilde called this spot “wild beauty”.
One of the most beautiful valleys on the Emerald Isle is hidden in the middle of the Wicklow Mountains: Glendalough. The Upper and Lower Lakes spread out like dark mirrors, reflecting the picturesque mountain landscape. Lush meadows, sparse forests and the silhouette of a round tower visible from afar invite you to linger here and perhaps listen to the roar of the Poulnass waterfall, while the legends of saints, monks and monsters that the locals tell each other come to life before your eyes.
Your visit to the Cliffs of Moher takes you from the tranquillity of Connemara to the cheerful noise of countless seabirds. After all, the cliffs are home to 30 different bird species. Standing on the edge of the world-famous cliffs, you almost seem to shrink in the face of the mighty forces of nature that once piled up the cliffs. No one can escape the magic of these gigantic rock faces – not even Hollywood, which discovered them for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, among others.
Ireland culinary treasures
Ireland’s cuisine is often seen in the tradition of poor people’s food. During your visit to Ireland, you will discover that this down-to-earth tradition can be very tasty and not at all poor. In addition to the famous Irish stew, it is mainly fish and seafood that has been tantalising the palate in recent times. Smoked wild salmon, oysters and lobster will win over even gourmets. Meat lovers can look forward to fine lamb and tender Angus beef. “Back to the roots, on the other hand, with soda bread, porridge, boxty, coddle and black pudding.
The authentic Ireland
When you arrive in Kilkenny, the Food and Craft Experience Trail invites you to an experience of a special kind. Follow its signs and savour wonderful local delicacies, discover the art of distilling in the Ballykeefe Distillery and look over the shoulders of craftsmen in the Cushendale Woollen Mills, who still bring old crafts to life today.
You can also discover the real Ireland at the Milk Market in Limerick. At small stalls, you can feast on delicacies made from ingredients grown on local farms. If you follow the aroma of bread, cheese and delicious street food, you will also find many an arts and crafts stall and exciting antiques.
