Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Tuff is an excellent material, as the people of Matera realised around 5,000 years ago when the first caves were built here. Today, the Sassi, as the cave houses are called in Italian, harbour the history of this magnificent city in all its facets. Surrounded by the light-coloured terracotta of the rock, you can immerse yourself in an exciting world of life.
Visit, for example, the Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, where you can revel in historical furniture and familiarise yourself with various artists’ tools. But you won’t just come across living spaces in the rock massif. Rock churches such as St Lucia alle Malve will surprise you with wonderful masterpieces, including frescoes from the 13th century. If you want to discover a different kind of homely elegance, the best place to get out of your hire car in Ravello is at Villa Rufolo.
You step out of the 13th century villa into a picturesque garden that ends right at the edge of a cliff. The view straight down from here may make you feel a little sick to your stomach. But the panorama that spreads out before you quickly draws your gaze forwards anyway and lets you start dreaming. Simply take your time on this personalised round trip and immerse yourself in the picturesque landscape of southern Italy.
Experience nature
The Amalfi Coast is considered one of the most beautiful spots in Italy. This reputation is confirmed with every kilometre you drive along the Amalfitana in a hire car. Rugged cliffs on one side, the deep blue sea on the other, continuing over bridges and past historic towns and villages, the panoramic road is a delight for the senses.
Perhaps you would like to take a right turn and explore the country on foot – for example on the “Path of the Gods”. Here you can stroll through one of the fragrant lemon groves that provide the fruit for the famous limoncello. But beware, the Amalfitana also has a bit of adrenalin in store. The almost 200-year-old road is very narrow in places and the hairpin bends can be steep. Beads of sweat could also appear on your forehead at Mount Vesuvius.
Exploring the fateful mountain of Pompeii completely on foot is a challenge for experienced hikers. However, the imposing cone with its 300 metre deep crater is also accessible to untrained hikers. Your hire car will take you up to 1,000 metres. Then it’s not far to the mouth of hell, which opened up in the year 79. Perhaps you will find your magical moment here – very close to the forces from the earth’s interior – on this individual 15-day round trip along the Amalfi Coast to Apulia.
Apulia - Mediterranean delight
Diversity can also be found in the regional cuisine of Apulia. Freshly caught fish and seafood can of course be found on almost all menus, while meat dishes dominate inland. However, there are also numerous dishes with fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, fennel, broccoli or cime di rapa, the slightly bitter-tasting stem cabbage.
In the narrow streets of Bari, you can look over the shoulders of the women working here on your tour of Puglia and see how orecchiette, the little ear-shaped pasta, is made in front of their own front door. What baguettes are to the French, taralli are to the Pugliese – baked dough curls that are served almost everywhere for dinner.
As in the rest of Italy, cheese is also made in Apulia. Whether it’s canestrato, cacioricotta, straciatella, which is similar to mozzarella, or burrata… Leave it up to your palate to decide and also which wine it likes best with it.
