Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Perugia boasts one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1308. Less well known is the city that lies beneath it. The catacombs are reminiscent of the Rocca Paolina, a fortress of Pope Paolo III, who had half the neighbourhood demolished for the huge power and prestige building. The citizens still resented this centuries later – and finally demolished the above-ground fortress in the 19th century.
What remains are underground parts of the fortress itself and its neighbourhood, where you descend into another world and into a piece of Italy in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. When you get out of your hire car in Viterbo on your 13-day round trip through Lazio and Umbria, you are even stepping onto ancient soil. Walk in the footsteps of the Romans and Etruscans around the city and discover the thermal baths mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his famous “Inferno”.
Experience nature
Terni is a postcard idyll of lush green hills, soaring mountainsides and dense forests. In the middle of the dreamlike landscape around the city, you will discover old castles and charming, somewhat sleepy villages on your individual round trip in a hire car – in short: here you will arrive in Italy off the beaten tourist track.
Even Lord Byron discovered “an eerie beauty” in this part of Italy when he saw the Cascata delle Marmore, the marble waterfalls. Here, the waters of the Velino rush down several steps over 100 metres into the depths. The hiking trails around this natural spectacle are sometimes cooled by the fine mist of the waterfalls, making the ascent more relaxed. However, if you turn off into the tunnel halfway up, you end up at the Balcone degli Innamorato and are almost standing in the fairytale waterfall itself.
Rome and surroundings – simply delicious
The cuisine of Rome and Lazio is plain and simple, but extremely flavoursome. As in almost all parts of Italy, Lazio also produces cheese, including Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, Pecorino di Piciniso and Pecorino Romano. There is also no shortage of pasta dishes here. You shouldn’t miss out on Rome’s most famous pasta dish, spaghetti alla carbonara, or spaghetti cacio e pepe, an extremely tasty dish with cheese and pepper. The gnocchi alla romana are made from durum wheat semolina and are baked in the oven with a sprinkling of cheese.
Artichokes are also an integral part of Roman cuisine – whether steamed, grilled, deep-fried or as pasta ai carciofi, they are always a delight. With pollo, saltimbocca or abbacchio alla romana, meat lovers will also get their money’s worth. Supplì, rice croquettes deep-fried with ragù and mozzarella that are reminiscent of Sicilian arancini, are ideal for snacks in between meals. Also very tasty: deep-fried courgette flowers, the tender-crispy fiori di zucca fritti. Of course, a good meal around Rome also needs a good wine, and in Lazio this is primarily produced as a white wine. Typical wines of the region are Frascati from the Castelli Romani, Orvieto and Est!Est!!!Est!!! from Montefiascone.
