Rome, Lazio and Umbria 2025
“I love central Italy above all because of its contrasts. On the one hand, the cosmopolitan metropolis Rome with the Vatican, Trevi Fountain and many other sights. On the other hand, Umbria, the green heart of Italy, with sleepy villages and rolling, lush green hills. A piece of postcard Italy is at home here.
My secret favourite here is Bolsena with its picturesque lake, the Monaldeschi Castle and the labyrinth of centuries-old catacombs beneath the town. You can also stroll through the town’s ancient past right in the heart of Bolsena and end up right next to the ancient Romans. You are sure to fall in love with this Umbrian gem. Thanks to your hire car, you are flexible enough to stay a little longer.
Of course, your journey to Rome can also start right on your doorstep. When travelling by your own car, we also plan and organise the route and accommodation for your individual trip through the transit countries according to your wishes.”

Rome and the surrounding area – cultural wealth
Hardly any other city offers such a variety of architecture and works of art as the capital city of Rome, situated on the River Tiber. On your round trip to Rome and its surroundings, you will encounter evidence of Western history from antiquity to the present day at every turn. The Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the Circus Maximus, the city within the city – the Vatican with St Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and Castel Sant’Angelo are of course part of the programme.
The Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain are also a must-see. Don’t miss the numerous parks and gardens – oases of peace where you can take in everything you have experienced. Wander through the various districts of Rome, each of which has its own charm and of course also offers impressive sights such as museums, churches, basilicas and squares. And you will understand why the city was once the centre of a world empire.
The area surrounding Rome also offers cultural “treats”. Immerse yourself in the time of the Etruscans and the Middle Ages in Viterbo and Civita di Bagnoregio, let yourself be seduced by the Renaissance gardens and water features in Tivoli or enjoy a spectacular view in the rebuilt Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino. Get an impression of how the Romans enjoyed themselves in the Grotto of Tiberius in Sperlonga. Or let your imagination run wild in the Monster Park of Bomarzo when you encounter the mythological and fantastic stone statues in the park.
The green heart of Italy – Umbria – is also not far away and with Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto, it’s not just culture-loving visitors who will have their hearts racing.
Rome and surroundings – slow down and enjoy
Enjoy the beautiful and lush nature of Lazio on long walks, for example at Lake Bracciano, Lake Bolsena or on hikes in the mountains. If you are looking for refreshment and relaxation after an extensive cultural programme, you will find what you are looking for between Lido di Ostia and Terracina, as there are numerous bathing opportunities here.
Things get even more relaxed in the Parco Nazionale del Circeo, because in addition to the beautiful villages of Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo, there are also fantastic beaches here. Are you ready for the island? Then plan time for an excursion to the island of Ponza. Cliffs, grottos, crystal-clear water and beaches, some of which can only be reached by boat, will quickly make you forget everyday life.
Rome and surroundings – simply delicious
The cuisine of Rome and Lazio is plain and simple, but extremely flavoursome. As in almost all parts of Italy, Lazio also produces cheese, including Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, Pecorino di Piciniso and Pecorino Romano. There is also no shortage of pasta dishes here. You shouldn’t miss out on Rome’s most famous pasta dish, spaghetti alla carbonara, or spaghetti cacio e pepe, an extremely tasty dish with cheese and pepper. The gnocchi alla romana are made from durum wheat semolina and are baked in the oven with a sprinkling of cheese.
Artichokes are also an integral part of Roman cuisine – whether steamed, grilled, deep-fried or as pasta ai carciofi, they are always a delight. With pollo, saltimbocca or abbacchio alla romana, meat lovers will also get their money’s worth. Supplì, rice croquettes deep-fried with ragù and mozzarella that are reminiscent of Sicilian arancini, are ideal for snacks in between meals. Also very tasty: deep-fried courgette flowers, the tender-crispy fiori di zucca fritti. Of course, a good meal around Rome also needs a good wine, and in Lazio this is primarily produced as a white wine. Typical wines of the region are Frascati from the Castelli Romani, Orvieto and Est!Est!!!Est!!! from Montefiascone.
