Laura Freire
A wonderful dream begins with sun on your skin

“For me, Portugal is a fascinating world between lively metropolises and small villages where time seems to stand still, between picturesque beaches on the endless ocean and the mediterranean hinterland with vineyards, wide plains and gently rolling mountains. It is this special mix that makes Portugal so fascinating to me. I simply have the choice of whether I feel like taking it easy, relaxing and catching my breath or whether I want to land headfirst in the hustle and bustle of the cities, in a fascinating history and with the hospitable people.

Especially with a hire car, I have the chance to simply linger where I feel comfortable. For example, I can simply stop in the middle of a vineyard and enjoy the view. But I can also stay a little longer in a pub and listen to the melancholic sounds of fado until I completely immerse myself in it. That’s why Portugal is a wonderful adventure for me to dream, live and experience.“

Tips for your journey through Portugal.

Driving in Portugal

In Portugal, the driver of a hire car must generally be at least 21 years old. For higher vehicle classes, a minimum age of 23 or even 25 years may be required. It is also possible that a minimum driving experience is required. Please note: You will not be able to hire a car without a credit card and the corresponding PIN code.

Driver's licence

It is possible to hire a car in Portugal with a German driving licence without any problems. The national driving licences of EU member states and Switzerland are recognised in Portugal. Of course, the driving licence must be valid. Therefore, please check the expiry date in good time before travelling.

Special traffic rules in Portugal

Right-hand traffic applies in Portugal. At roundabouts, vehicles on the roundabout have right of way. On multi-lane roundabouts, the outer lane may only be used when leaving the roundabout at the next exit.

Tolls

A toll is charged on the motorways depending on the vehicle class and the distance travelled. Payment is made at toll stations in cash or by credit card. However, there are also routes on which the toll is collected electronically and cash payment is not possible (blue signs with 'electronic toll only'). Most providers will lend you a device for recording toll charges for a small fee. You will be charged when you return your hire car.

Parking rules

In Portugal, stopping and parking bans are clearly marked with yellow markings on the edge of the carriageway. White lines mark car parks, but these are often subject to a charge at certain times ('zona pago') or may only be used by residents.

Speed limits in Portugal

A limit of 50 km/h applies within built-up areas, 90 km/h is permitted on rural roads and 100 km/h on dual carriageways. A speed limit of 120 km/h applies on motorways.

Time difference in Portugal

The time difference between Portugal and Germany is -1 hour all year round on the mainland and in Madeira.
