Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
You start your round trip in Porto. Here you will encounter magnificent Renaissance and Baroque buildings, savour the full-bodied wine – and listen to the fado. Like the soul of the country that has become music, it permeates the streets and invites you to experience the Portuguese attitude to life for yourself in one of the many fado bars.
Make a stopover in Sintra in your hire car and discover the fairytale palace Quinta da Regaleira. But beware, looking into the underground tower of the complex can make you a little dizzy. But that shouldn’t stop you from exploring the labyrinth beneath the estate’s park.
Back in the daylight, you will stroll through Coimbra, Portugal’s oldest university city. Immerse yourself in Lisbon’s 18th century urban flair in the Baixa neighbourhood, among others. Or take the small, yellow tram on line 28, which will take you to corners of Lisbon where the authentic, everyday Lisbon is at home. Portugal is a treasure trove of cultures, from the Romans to the Moors and the Spanish, in which you will discover many a gem.
Portugal culinary delights
Portugal’s cuisine is as varied as its landscapes. This is particularly evident in the Portuguese national dish bacalhau, for which there is a recipe for every day of the year, as the saying goes. In addition to a large selection of fish and seafood dishes meat dishes of pork, veal or kid, soups and stews also play a major role, especially in the interior.
More and more restaurants are focussing on modern and innovative cuisine based on traditional recipes using the finest olive oil and local ingredients. Of course, a good wine should not be missing here. In addition to the famous port wine, the wines of the Douro and the Alentejo are particularly worth tasting.
Like the Spanish, the Portuguese also have their appetisers, the petiscos. In addition to cheese and barnacles, bolinhos de bacalhau or dumplings with various fillings are among the small appetisers. But the Portuguese also like it sweet. The pastéis de nata, originally from Lisbon, are particularly popular, as are the ovos moles typical of Aveiro – little calorie bombs but definitely worth to taste.
The authentic Portugal
Porto’s wines are world-famous – but they are not the only good wines from Portugal. That’s why you should stop by a winery near Óbidos on your round trip, which still presses its fine wines in the ambience of a traditional estate as it did centuries ago.
Here you can follow the origins of wine in one of Portugal’s oldest wine regions and travel back in time as you wander through the rooms of the old, labyrinthine manor house. The icing on the cake is, of course, the wines, whose multifaceted nuances you will taste during your visit.
