Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Portugal was once one of the most powerful seafaring nations. The self-confidence and spirit of discovery of the old Portuguese still wafts through the walls of the impressive Castelo de São Jorge today. Up here on its walls, you feel as if you are looking down from Lisbon’s yesterday to today. Down below, in the maze of alleyways along the Tagus, this today embraces you with charming squares, the LX Factory, an old factory that is now home to a synthesis of art gallery, authentic street food and co-working space.
Marvão also has a time-honoured castle and a maze of small alleyways to offer. The whitewashed houses and marvellous churches are still enclosed by the historic city wall, behind which lies the expanse of the Serra de São Mamede.
Évora is another gem on this customised round trip. Once the centre of humanism, the city still impresses today with beauties such as the Se Cathedral, the Praça do Giraldo and the stylish splendour of the Paço dos Condes de Basto. The Capela dos Ossos is an almost macabre and yet fascinating witness to history, with the remains of countless people on its walls and columns.
Experience nature
During the 12 days of your personalised round trip through the Alentejo, you will have the opportunity to fall in love with the diversity of Portugal’s landscapes. Stroll along the fine sandy beaches of Vila Nova de Milfontes through the refreshing waters and enjoy the view of the mighty cliffs that also support the white houses of the town.
During your visit to Marvão, stop off en route in your hire car to experience the sparse forests, rocky heights and rushing streams of the Serra de São Mamede. Around Évora, the ancient cork oaks and olive groves invite you to linger – a paradise you will dream of for a long time.
Portugal culinary delights
Portugal’s cuisine is as varied as its landscapes. This is particularly evident in the Portuguese national dish bacalhau, for which there is a recipe for every day of the year, as the saying goes. In addition to a large selection of fish and seafood dishes meat dishes of pork, veal or kid, soups and stews also play a major role, especially in the interior.
More and more restaurants are focussing on modern and innovative cuisine based on traditional recipes using the finest olive oil and local ingredients. Of course, a good wine should not be missing here. In addition to the famous port wine, the wines of the Douro and the Alentejo are particularly worth tasting.
Like the Spanish, the Portuguese also have their appetisers, the petiscos. In addition to cheese and barnacles, bolinhos de bacalhau or dumplings with various fillings are among the small appetisers. But the Portuguese also like it sweet. The pastéis de nata, originally from Lisbon, are particularly popular, as are the ovos moles typical of Aveiro – little calorie bombs but definitely worth to taste.
The authentic Portugal
Pssssst! The fado is about to begin. Enjoy the profound tunes up close in a renowned Lisbon restaurant and take a deep look into the Portuguese soul.
In Tomar, on the other hand, you will be captivated by the magic of past centuries as you follow in the footsteps of the famous Knights Templar in one of their most important bastions. Here you will not only admire the exquisite architecture of the wealthy Templars. You will also discover their close connection to Portugal, which still characterises the country and its people today.
