Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Lisbon, the “city of seven hills”, is a melting pot of cultures and eras. Discover the traces of Romans, Moors and Spaniards and the great age of seafarers, to whom the Padrão dos Descobrimentos has erected a lasting monument right by the sea, not just along Tram 28. Faro with its picturesque old town is almost like a tropical paradise.
You will find a particularly exquisite detail on the Castelo dos Governadores: the Manueline window where King Sebastião said his last prayer before his fateful journey to Africa. On your 14-day round trip to the Algarve, you will discover further exquisite details in the old town of Tavira as you wander through the narrow, cobbled streets. Even today, some of the traditional houses still have the classic pyramid roofs and wooden lattice portals, which guarantee clever ventilation in hot summers.
Experience nature
The Ria Formosa National Park between Tavira and Faro is a unique landscape. Lagoons, shallow, turquoise-blue sea, fine sand and countless birds and other animals make the region a paradise. Barefoot, you can feel this landscape particularly intensely and virtually become one with it as you watch the flamingos elegantly stalking through the shallow water.
Whether you stay here or get out of your hire car at another point on your individual round trip, don’t forget your binoculars. They will bring you very close to the countless, sometimes rather secretive inhabitants of the Algarve.
You won’t need binoculars to see the spectacle of colour in this region, which begins with the delicate pink of the almond trees in January and February and shines in all facets of colour until the dark red of the flowering pomegranate trees in September.
Portugal culinary delights
Portugal’s cuisine is as varied as its landscapes. This is particularly evident in the Portuguese national dish bacalhau, for which there is a recipe for every day of the year, as the saying goes. In addition to a large selection of fish and seafood dishes meat dishes of pork, veal or kid, soups and stews also play a major role, especially in the interior.
More and more restaurants are focussing on modern and innovative cuisine based on traditional recipes using the finest olive oil and local ingredients. Of course, a good wine should not be missing here. In addition to the famous port wine, the wines of the Douro and the Alentejo are particularly worth tasting.
Like the Spanish, the Portuguese also have their appetisers, the petiscos. In addition to cheese and barnacles, bolinhos de bacalhau or dumplings with various fillings are among the small appetisers. But the Portuguese also like it sweet. The pastéis de nata, originally from Lisbon, are particularly popular, as are the ovos moles typical of Aveiro – little calorie bombs but definitely worth to taste.
The authentic Algarve
The Ria Formosa is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. On your 14-day round trip in the Algarve, why not change your perspective of this unique natural area and get on a boat? From the catamaran, you can watch the birds, let the cool wind caress your face or plunge into the water.
Goosebumps await you near Lagos when you visit the imposing cliffs, fascinating rock formations and caves by sailing boat. Here, sea and land have created another world where time seems to hold its breath.
