Geotoura – Hotel concept
When we include a hotel in our programme, it is not only a high standard of quality that is important to us. We prefer typical local accommodation, often boutique hotels with a special ambience. They emphasise the character of an individual trip: Panoramic views, particularly lovely furnishings, a location in historic centres, no mass tourism and, of course, exceptionally friendly hosts – these are important criteria for us.
We divide our hotels into four separate Geotoura categories. Of course, you have the choice and can also combine the categories on one trip.
Boutique Hotels – Four categories
Encantador (“Charming”): Our most affordable option. Lovingly furnished rooms that offer everything the discerning traveller expects.
Especial (“Special”): Hotels with a special ambience – historic palaces, monasteries, haciendas or beach hotels with exceptional charm. Perfect for the classic cultural tour.
Extraordinario (“Extraordinary”): Luxurious hotels in excellent locations and with the highest level of comfort, often in centuries-old aristocratic palaces, old oil mills or haciendas.
Luna de Miel (“honeymoon”): For the honeymoon – span. Luna de miel – or if you want to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary …
Character of this travel idea
Experience culture
Coimbra’s university has been a place of science and teaching since the 13th century. Climb the tower, whose bells have set the rhythm of learning here over the centuries. From up here you have a fantastic 360° panoramic view of the city.
Belém, a neighbourhood in Lisbon where you can get up close and personal with the past, also has a great – and a little – history. Probably the most impressive place to do this is the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, which will fascinate you with its sheer size, but also with its wealth of detail. Just a stone’s throw away is the Jardim Botânico d’Ajuda, the oldest botanical garden in the country. After a stroll through the grounds, you should give in to the temptation that wafts from so many of Lisbon’s bakeries.
The small pastéis de nata are practically a culinary cultural asset. After all, they are still baked today in the same way as they were once invented by a baker near the monastery in the 18th century. So it’s worth taking a closer look at these little things on this 15-day tour of Portugal. You will discover many an interesting story behind them.
Exoerience nature
As you approach the extreme south-west near Sagres, you will find yourself in a very unspoilt landscape. It is its tranquillity and vastness that make hiking here so uniquely beautiful. At the same time, you are standing on historical ground in this marvellous natural setting.
Explorers such as Henry the Navigator last looked at this coastal landscape before setting off on great voyages. The west coast of Sagres is particularly beautiful for hiking. The wilder and steeper half of the region offers marvellous views from above.
On the east coast, on the other hand, you will find countless bays with fine sandy beaches for swimming, relaxing and taking endless walks on the beach while the waves wash over your feet. On this individual 15-day round trip through Portugal, it’s worth leaving the hire car behind for a while and taking a deep breath of the tranquillity of this region.
Portugal culinary delights
Portugal’s cuisine is as varied as its landscapes. This is particularly evident in the Portuguese national dish bacalhau, for which there is a recipe for every day of the year, as the saying goes. In addition to a large selection of fish and seafood dishes meat dishes of pork, veal or kid, soups and stews also play a major role, especially in the interior.
More and more restaurants are focussing on modern and innovative cuisine based on traditional recipes using the finest olive oil and local ingredients. Of course, a good wine should not be missing here. In addition to the famous port wine, the wines of the Douro and the Alentejo are particularly worth tasting.
Like the Spanish, the Portuguese also have their appetisers, the petiscos. In addition to cheese and barnacles, bolinhos de bacalhau or dumplings with various fillings are among the small appetisers. But the Portuguese also like it sweet. The pastéis de nata, originally from Lisbon, are particularly popular, as are the ovos moles typical of Aveiro – little calorie bombs but definitely worth to taste.
