Our recommendation for you

It would only be a short flight to Edinburgh, the heart of Scotland. But then you would miss out on the beauty of Amsterdam, which delights art fans with the van Gogh Museum and the Rembrandthuis. The architecturally contrasting Rotterdam would also pass you by, as would the historic Newcastle upon Tyne. In addition, the ferry connection from Holland to the British Isles offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the spectacular coastal landscape of the North Sea. So feel free to set off in your own car on your round trip to Scotland, which can last 14 days or longer. We will customise the route to suit your wishes.

Scotland round trip by car What do I need to consider?

Driving in Scotland is a unique experience that rewards travellers with breathtaking landscapes, scenic roads and a wealth of historic attractions. To ensure that you can fully enjoy your car or rental car tour of Scotland, you just need to keep a few things in mind.

In Scotland, you drive on the left side of the road. This may be unfamiliar to visitors from countries with right-hand traffic. Take time to get used to it during your car tour of Scotland before heading for the larger cities, such as Edinburgh or Glasgow. Speed limits in Scotland are expressed in miles per hour (mph). The standard speed limit on country roads is usually 60 mph, on motorways 70 mph and in built-up areas 30 mph. Please note the signs for special speed limits. Scotland is famous for its breathtaking mountain roads, which are often narrow and winding. If you venture into the Highlands, be prepared for changeable weather conditions and drive with particular care in mountainous regions.

With your own car or a hire car flexibly to Scotland's most beautiful spots

A road trip through Scotland, whether in your own car or a rental car, offers you pure flexibility. Whether you want to explore a national park in depth or search for the most beautiful coastal sections on the North Coast 500 route – travelling by car allows you to travel at your own pace. If you are travelling to Edinburgh by plane, we recommend that you only pick up your rental car when you are ready to continue your journey. This way you can enjoy the city on foot before exploring Scotland on your own.
