Fascinating culture in Andalusia
Andalusia is characterised by an enormous cultural and artistic heritage – traces of a history that stretches back thousands of years. The heyday under the Moors gave rise to majestic buildings such as the Alhambra of Granada or the mosque-cathedral of Córdoba – the Mezquita. There is also so much more to discover on your round trip: white villages with traditional architecture where time seems to have stood still and where traditional handicrafts are still practised today; imposing castles perched on the hills that seem to watch over the landscape as well as monasteries and palaces, true jewels of art history.
As the home of Velázquez, Murillo and Picasso, masterpieces of painting can be found in even the most remote places. The Andalusian way of life is best experienced at the fiestas held throughout the year or at a flamenco performance.
Wonderful natural landscapes in Andalusia
Andalusia is home to the most protected natural areas in Spain. You can experience the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the desert landscape in the province of Almería in a small area. Andalusia is characterised by its variety of different, often contrasting landscapes.
Olive groves, in the provinces of Córdoba and Jaén, mountain ranges and beaches, swamp and dune landscapes in the Coto de Doñana National Park, Dehesas, but also karst mountains with bizarre rock formations such as those of the El Torcal Natural Park are characteristic of the region, which is a habitat for numerous species, including many birds, mammals and reptiles. Whether you are looking for tranquillity in nature, want to hike or be active – there is something for everyone on your Andalusia tour.
Andalusia culinary delights
In addition to its authentic Mediterranean cuicine, Andalusia is celebrated chiefly for its tapas. The ‘tapeo’ is an Andalusian custom in which the small appetisers are eaten in company and accompanied by a glass of wine or the increasingly popular Spanish beer. In other words, eating is a sociable experience in which the restaurant is often changed for the next bite.
Moorish influences can also be found in Andalusian dishes, for example in the use of spices such as saffron, cumin, oranges, almonds and honey. Fish and seafood are naturally at the top of the menu, especially on the coast.
In the interior, on the other hand, it is more hearty meat dishes that tantalise the palate. A particularly refreshing drink is the sherry produced in Andalusia – well chilled and ranging from really sweet to very dry, there is something for every taste.
Not forgetting the Jamón Ibérico – sliced into wafer-thin slices – which you should not miss out on when travelling through Andalusia.
